4 2nd interlude

Ballet and Mime of the Quest for a Star

Lyrics by Frank DiGiacomo and Julian R. Pace.
Premiere Libretto Artwork by Randall Elliot.

Night has fallen and the Animals still have not reached Bethlehem. Timothy Nighingale flies ahead and coming back to Joshua, tells him the disappointing news that they are lost.

In their stumbling they have awakened Sir Beetle from his seven year sleep. At first annoyed, he soon is delighted to not have missed this special night of the birth of the Holy Child that had been foretold to him as well. He and Timothy resolve to fly into the sky and back, to bring a tiny star, to light the Company on their way.

 LYRICS
    Chorus:
        Farewell, farewell!

As the Chorus sings a wordless Vocalise, the Nightingale and Beetle are seen flying upwards. They pass dancers dressed as clouds, then the Moon, and various Constellations. They pass Angels on their way to Bethlehem. Finally they arrive at the Stars. Reaching up, the Beetle plucks one little Star.

They dance for joy. As they begin their downward flight, the Chorus sings:

    Chorus:
        And together, down they flew,
past streams of stars, and pools of moonlight,
past laughing planets and singing rainbows,
back to Earth and back to night.
