Between 1982 and 1992 American composer Frank DiGiacomo wrote his music using the emerging technologies of electronic sound production. In the autumn of 1982, some committed friends and family, especially Laura Scarmato, the mother of his dear friend Ira C. Smith, made possible the acquisition of a Synclavier II™ Music Synthesizer. This device freed Mr. DiGiacomo from the difficulties and frustrations of live performance and put the generation of his musical ideas entirely into his hands. The possibilities of unique custom sound constructions were now available to him.
He worked in this medium for 10 years and produced the original selections presented here as well as many other sound realizations of his compositions originally written for conventional forces. He had the valuable assistance, in the recording studio he built, of his long time associate, Julian R. Pace, whose Italian and Latin translations for DiGiacomo’s vocal music and collaborations on the original DiGiacomo libretti, can be found on the singdigiacomo.com companion site.
Mr. DiGiacomo wanted to integrate mechanical sound production with live performance. His idea for works involving texts or libretti, was to create in essence the accompaniment with this technology, in as elaborate or simplistic a manner as he chose, and add the voices in the studio. Unfortunately he left us before he was able to complete a project using this concept.
