The Ave maris stella is a popular liturgical hymn of unknown origin. It can be dated back to at least the 9th century for it is preserved in the Codex Sangallensis, a 9th century manuscript now in the Swiss Monastery of Saint Gallen. Its inclusion in the Codex points to possible composition in the 8th century. It has been attributed to Venantius Fortunatus who died in 609 and also Paul the Deacon who died in 787, as well as several other possible sources.
This piece resulted from a detailed sketch of the notation found posthumously among the Composer’s papers, which was then scored by Erwin R. Vrooman. It is not known when Frank DiGiacomo composed his setting of the first three verses.

LYRICS
Ave maris stella, Dei Mater alma
Hail star of the sea, bountiful mother of God

atque semper Virgo, felix caeli porta.
and ever Virgin, blessed gate of heaven.

Sumens illud Ave Gabrielis ore,
Taking that Ave from the mouth of Gabriel,

funda nos in pace, mutans Hevae nomen.
establish us in peace, giving Eve a new name.

Solve vincula reis, profer lumen caecis
Loose the chains of sinners, bring light to the blind,

mala nostra pelle, bona cuncta posce.
banish our ills, invoke all things good.
