This song, along with Song on a Poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, A Farewell, and Peace, was written for and dedicated to Ms. Patti Thompson using texts of her own choosing. Although originally written on a poem by Robert Frost, in preparing this website it was discovered that the copyright holders of the Frost poetry have withdrawn permission for their use as song lyrics.
Rather than lose this evocative song about winter, it was decided to cast an entirely new lyric fitted to the original notation and the spirit of the music. The song may be heard as a sound file with synthetic voice, obviously without the text listed below, and as a piano only file for rehearsal purposes.

LYRICS
I love to see the twilight skies, the clouds all tinted soft as sighs.
I do not need much company, to watch the leaves fly down the lane so free.
The lakeside reeds toss to and fro, to dance amidst the whirling snow,
and as the wind blows past me branches chatter to me as I go.
It gives the milkweed pods a shake, to drive the fluffs across the lake.
And as I watched, a deer came in sight, alarming some birds, who took to flight.
The sun is splendid as it dies, the colors rich before my eyes,
the light so soft before it dies. . .the light so soft before it dies.
