Here are Dr. Epolito’s Program Notes:
“A circular band is, and has been for a long time, a symbol of the unification of two human beings. It has been the traditional representation of commitment and promise. “Alice Childress’ play, Wedding Band, feelingly depicts a relationship between a man and a woman that is sincere and admirable. But the conflicts within society cannot help but militate against the serenity of this union. The fear, the ignorance, the lack of compassion that can rest in all human beings will always impinge upon the relationship that does not totally ‘conform’ ― as if any one could. And in southern USA, in 1918, the black woman, Julia, and the white man, Herman, find that they must not only contend with their personal problems but also the familial, social, and legal problems that beset them.
“Ms. Childress tells her story with a varied assortment of characters - and we hope to present it - with a varied assortment of portrayals so that you, the audience, will become involved in a dilemma that is both recognizably human and excitingly theatrical.”
